Custom gauges holder
Little write-up on how to make your own gauge holder. This one is located on the dashboard.
The mx5 NB / MK2.5 dash does not have much space for these, so i decided to put them on top of the original gauges.
I started with making a mold of the top part, and the little plastic cover in between the steering wheel and dashboard. First put some quick release wax, and the i put a white gel coat. The gel coat is not really necessary, but it helps me see later where i need to trim the piece.
This morning i took it off, and damn it became nice! perfect fit! Tonight i start making the gauges holders on it.

I decided to make the holder myself. I could not find a pipe a the hardware store that would fit the gauges. They were either just to small, are to big.
So i first put some wax on the meter, than wrapped it with aluminum foil, and then put some tape around it. Last thing was putting the mold release wax on the tape. Then i put the fiberglass on it.
I must say, they turned out really good!
Also made the decision, to put 3 holders on the dash, and one in front of the console.
Tonight we make 2 more holders, and hopefully can start on the finishing shape.

Did some more work on it. it is coming more together now!!
i first put a stretch t-shirt over it, and put polyester raison on that. Than once it was hard. i had cut away the parts that i did not like. Next step was to put the polyester cloth on it. Then is was time to start with the bondo (filler with poly parts in it).
That is how far i got now. Tonight some more sanding and filling with a finer filler, and then more sanding! hahaha
Well here are the pictures:
The custom dashboard holder is getting along.
Did a test fit
Only problem i had, was i used a heater on the holder to dry the paint quicker… and now it got to warm or something… it got bubbles! Well i will be fixing that during the week.

The custom dashboard Gauge holder is finished! Directly replaced the gauges by SLM gauges bought from Fullcartuning!
The AF gauge is replaced by a water tempurature, since i already have a digital AF gauge.
